Classes explained
- GTP / Hypercar
- The top prototype class. GTP is IMSA's name for it, Hypercar is the WEC's. Factory-backed hybrid prototypes fighting for overall wins.
- LMP2
- A spec-chassis prototype class below the top one, mainly for privateer teams. Raced in IMSA, ELMS and the Asian Le Mans Series.
- LMP3
- Entry-level prototypes: cheaper and slower, a ladder for young drivers and amateurs (ELMS, Asian Le Mans Series).
- GT3 (GTD PRO, GTD, LMGT3)
- Race cars based on road-going sports cars such as the Porsche 911, Ferrari and BMW M4, kept close by a Balance of Performance. IMSA splits them into GTD PRO (all-pro crews) and GTD (pro-am crews); the WEC and ELMS call the class LMGT3. source
- SRO cups: Pro, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Pro-Am
- SRO's GT3 series run one grid split into cups by driver rating (Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze). Pro crews fight for the overall win; Bronze cups pair amateur drivers with pros; Pro-Am crews mix the two. source
- GT500 / GT300
- Super GT's two classes: GT500 is a bespoke top class, GT300 includes GT3 cars.
- GS / TCR
- The IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge classes: Grand Sport (GT4-style cars) and TCR touring cars. source
